Looking back, I think I
always realized there would come a day when I would join my parents here at
Otto’s. After all, I had grown up watching them pour themselves into this
dealership, and somewhere along the way, I came to my own appreciation of the
automobile business they loved and worked so hard to build.
But as inevitable as it may have seemed that I would have a role at some
point, I also knew this was not where I would get my start. It was important to
me – and my parents – that I explore other options and, in essence, make my own
way in life.
I graduated from Ithaca College in 1998 with a degree in international
business, and my plan was to move to New York City. Many of my friends were
there, and while the jobs for which I interviewed didn’t really connect with my
passions, they seemed like a reasonable way to get out into the working world.
Then serendipity intervened in the form of a casual conversation, which
then led to an interview at BMW NA, which, in turn, led to an internship offer.
For the next six years, I served in a series of marketing, sales, and
distribution positions in various BMW divisions, and in the process, developed
an even deeper sense of connection and commitment to the automotive industry.
In the meantime, things were evolving at Otto’s in a way that made my
coming here a timely and appropriate choice. I started out as QMS [Quality
Management Systems] Project Leader, where I learned and implemented the
day-to-day principles and practices set forth by BMW, customized to fit the
specifics of each dealership. It also gave me an understanding of service and
parts, which were new operational areas for me.
In January 2006, the position of Sales Manager became available, and I
was glad for the opportunity to take on the responsibility. I had spent years
observing and working with BMW dealerships around the country, and really felt
ready to build on the founding vision which I believe has always differentiated
Otto’s.
There have been enormous changes in consumer shopping patterns and
attitudes over the past decade or so, particularly with the revolutionary role
of the Internet. And while we continue to be industry leaders in adapting
technology to accommodate the preferences of our customers, we will never lose
sight of the importance of personal relationships. They have always been what
has set us apart – and why third-generation customers tell us they wouldn’t go
any where else.

I developed an affinity for
sales pretty early in life. Growing up, my parents had a vacation home on Lake
Wallenpaupack, and the year I turned twelve my father decided he’d start a snack
delivery business that my older brother Chip and I would run. So for the next
several summers, five days a week, we drove around the lake in our “Chip’s
Snacks” truck, building a loyal clientele and earning a modest income. It was my
first real opportunity to experience the fruits of initiative, hard work, and
good customer service. It was an excellent life lesson.
I learned more about hard work
after I graduated from Conestoga High School and went with Penco Products making
steel lockers and shelving forty hours a week while going to night school at
Ursinus College. It was grueling at times, but it definitely reinforced my
appreciation of work and its rewards.
That said, I was very pleased
when my dad was able to get me an interview at a local Chrysler dealership where
he had bought a number of cars. I got the job – and a taste for selling
automobiles that has only increased over the ensuing 32 years.
My next move was to a domestic
dealership in Wayne, where I became sales manager and, as that business divided
and grew, ultimately general manager. I stayed there for 21 years, leaving only
when the company was sold. At that point, I decided I wanted to work for a
high-end import dealership, with BMW being my preference. And because these cars
are so different, I concluded that becoming a Client Advisor would be the best
way to learn the product line – which is what I did.
With a half-dozen years of
successful selling under my belt, and having achieved the #1 customer service
ranking in the country, I realized it was time to get back into management, and
that Otto’s was the place I wanted to be. I had been aware of this dealership
for years, and always admired the amazing facility, so when this position became
available, I was delighted to accept it.
I think I bring to this job a
good combination of solid administrative skills and a real understanding of what
it’s like to be a buyer and seller on the front lines. And because I will be in
constant contact with customers, I will be able to retain in management many of
the things I enjoyed in sales.
I’m
married with a daughter at West Chester University, two grown stepchildren, and
a couple of step grandchildren. I enjoy playing golf and love spending time
with my family, including regular summer vacations at the beach.

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and moved here in 1985 looking for a better life. My first job was doing landscaping and lawn maintenance for Radley Run, a local country club. A year later, I was hired by Scott Honda to work in the vehicle prep area, where I washed customers’ cars that had been in for service and also detailed new cars for delivery.
I was laid off in December 1992, but within two weeks had gotten a job here at Otto’s doing the same sorts of things. After a couple of years, however, the dealership volume had increased to the point that it was no longer possible for our Sales Advisors to inspect and process the incoming vehicles on their own. It was at that point that I transferred to the sales department and became our “lot tender,” checking over the cars as they came in from BMW, organizing them by model, and making sure they were nicely displayed on the lot.
In May 2007, my responsibilities evolved once more when I was chosen for this position. As Pre-Owned Manager, I deal directly with customers who simply want to sell us their vehicle without purchasing another, plus I support our Sales Manager by preparing appraisals on trade-ins and getting those cars into the shop for reconditioning and certification.
This is by far the best place I’ve ever worked. I love the people and I love my job. When I do have time off, my wife and I work on our house, cheer for our daughter at her soccer or basketball games, and on Sundays, spend time in church. It’s a wonderful life and we really feel blessed. |

A
friend once described my approach to life as “passionate participation,” and I
think it’s true. Whether it’s my commitment to my family, my involvement in
sports, or selling these amazing automobiles, I am wired to go all out for the
things that matter most to me.
My dad was really into cars, and that sparked my interest. I remember he bought
an Acura Legend when they first came out, which he loved, and when I was old
enough, I got an NSX. I was really impressed with its engine – I thought it
sounded like a Formula One – and it remained my favorite car until I discovered
BMWs.
I was born in New London, Connecticut, but moved to Downingtown with my parents
when I was ten. After high school, I studied photography at Drexel University
and worked in the restaurant business, first as a waiter and then bartender.
That’s when I first realized I was a bit of a natural around customers, finding
the interaction really satisfying.
One day a friend at a local car dealership put it together for me, basically
saying “you like automobiles, you’ll love selling them.” I got a job there, and
it turned out he was right. It was also there that I bought my first BMW, a 2000
328 coupe stick shift. I was impressed by the styling and sportiness, and of
course, with its reputation.
It wasn’t long before I realized this was the car I wanted to sell, and after a
few months of hounding the manager here at Otto’s, a position opened up in
January 2005. It’s been great, particularly since we launched our Exton
dealership and I get to work here where I grew up. It’s really comfortable for
me.
And that’s my approach with customers – comfortable. I never push, but instead
listen carefully, using my instincts and experience to help them find the model
best suited to their priorities. They seem to appreciate my enthusiasm and
product knowledge.
When I’m not selling, I’m all about sports. I am addicted to mountain biking and
snowboarding, and the best is when those seasons overlap. Once I went heli-boarding
in British Columbia, which was quite a rush. And while my wife and daughters
don’t go to those extremes, they definitely enjoy sharing the sport – and the
travel – with me. |

I was
born and raised in the Lancaster County area. After college, I worked at
a VW-Porsche-Audi dealer in Lancaster until I left to start my own
company transporting high-line vehicles in the Mid-Atlantic region. A
couple of years later, however, I decided I really wanted to get back
into the activity of a dealership, and with my family history, BMW was
the natural choice.
I was actually the ultimate BMW baby, having
been born just as my mother was being lifted from our 1600 Alpina onto a
gurney. Dad still has that ’67 Alpina, and has added a number of other
BMWs over the years, mostly M cars. My first automobile was also a
Bimmer – a 1976 2002.
Our family had been in the furniture
business since 1820, but growing up my dad always had an interest in
cars. He had a shop where he restored and repaired vehicles, and
throughout the late sixties and early seventies he competed in a lot of
road races, hill-climbs, and MINI stocks. I’m a big Formula One fan, and
have been following the sport since I was a kid.
Here at Otto’s,
my style of presentation bridges the early “enthusiasts-only” days to
now, where BMWs are viewed and widely admired as the world’s best luxury
sports vehicles. I like to talk to people, find out what’s important to
them, and put them in the right car. I strive hard to make sure my
clients find the perfect automobile for their needs and desires. It’s
important to me that they’re completely satisfied with the entire
process.
Beyond my family and Motorsport, my passions include
traveling, mountain biking, and visiting vineyards, both here and
abroad.

I was born
and raised in Coatesville on a working dairy farm begun by my
grandfather, and it was something I assumed I’d continue into the next
generation. It was a deeply satisfying way of life, but it was certainly
relentless in its responsibilities. After my dad became disabled in my
mid-teens, I took over running the operation, which meant getting up at
early every morning and working very hard the entire day. I did that for
five years, every day, without exception. When you’re a teenager that’s
tough.
At 21, my father realized he needed to sell the farm, and that freed me
to try several different work paths, including real estate appraising,
selling phone systems, and finally, in 1996, to a job in the sales
department at Town Motors, the Chrysler-Jeep dealership formerly on this
site. When that business closed and the property was sold to Otto’s, it
opened an obvious – and very attractive – opportunity to start selling
BMWs. It was a significant upgrade for me in every way.
As different as my life is now – I have days off and get to go on
vacation – I still feel connected to the farm in important ways,
particularly in the lessons I learned. I know the value of hard work,
for instance, and of going the extra mile, something I’m happy to do for
my customers all the time.
What was new for me when I went into sales was realizing I had a gift
for building relationships, for meeting people from all walks of life
and being totally comfortable around them. For someone who kept his own
company growing up, I now find that it is connecting with people which
really animates me.
I’ve retained my interest in real estate, and as something of a hobby,
have been investing in properties in the area. In one sense, I’m
planting my stake in the world the way my grandfather did with the farm,
but more important to me, I’m investing myself in trying to make a
difference in the lives of my tenants. I find it very gratifying,
particularly when I can be a mentoring force in the lives of kids who
may not experience that in other ways.
As far as my time off, I enjoy watching sports and weight training. I
would love to travel more, and plan to at my first opportunity. |

I
love interacting with others, and have always looked for positions where meeting
new people was part of the job. That’s why being the one who welcomes visitors
to our showroom and guides them to the appropriate person is such a good fit for
me.
I’ve worked in the automotive field most of my life, starting back in
the 1980s with a leasing company not far from here. I liked all parts of
that job, especially the customer contact and handling the various
logistical aspects, like the credit application, the documentation, the
registration work, getting it funded at the bank, dealing with any
problems they had, and basically making sure everybody was happy. I did
that for twelve years, ending up as office manager.
At
that point, there was a transition in the business as dealerships
started taking over their own leasing. It was also a transition time for
me. Having just had my third child, I decided to cut back to part time,
and held a variety of jobs. That changed the day I saw a classified ad
for Town Motors Leasing, a companion company of the dealership that used
to operate at this location. I called and badgered them until they hired
me, and I was here for five-and-half years, until the day they closed
their doors. It was a stroke of good fortune when Otto’s announced plans
to open a BMW dealership here, and I was able to join the team.
In
addition to working here full time, I also waitress at Cracker Barrel in
Downingtown every Sunday from 5:30 in the morning till 5:00 in the
afternoon. The managers there wonder how I do it, but the truth is I
really enjoying meeting my customers and making sure they’re taken care.
It’s just the way I’m wired.
For recreation I like to read in the sun or go motorcycle riding both
locally and all over the state. Chester and Lancaster Counties, for
instance, have dozens of charming covered bridges that are fun to visit.
After a long week at work, it’s just great to be outside.
